Figured it out! The default selection goes by ShipMethodId which gets displayed in the order you have them set in the admin. All I had to do was move Free Shipping above UPS in the admin and now a customer see this as the default selection.

How do I get to have a custom free shipping method stay as a default selection during checkout? Right now it will still show a UPS option. OUr method is for free shipping on orders over 375. We want this to be the first selection so customers do not get confused. Thanks
