Both the host and AC are blaming "store customization" which doesn't make sense to me at all. We have only worked through the online interface doing the cosmetic work and have not even had access to the actual store files.

Here here!!!! I have needed this type of option several times for clients that are moving from a current internal inventory system to the web. We upload the data, ftp up the images and then spend hours associating the images with the appropriate item.
