So here's the 5.2 site, please let me know what you think we should do to improve it when we move to 5.5

The site looks nice. I'd just play around with your styles a bit so that the center portion of the pages completely fill up the available space. Right now pages like category pages have a very narrow main content section because the content isn't wide enough to fill the area. With some CSS you can make that center cell fill the width between the left and right navigation.
