Product Visibility?

I'm trying to find out if its possible, using the API and/or custom development to use the product "Visibility" setting to set products visible based upon user groups. Essentially I want to only show certain projects to certain groups of users. This would operate in the same fashion as the different pricing options for different user groups. Before I dig too far in on actually doing it, I'd like to know how robust the API is or what level of custom development would be required to make this happen, either with the current visibility property or with a new property. Any ideas? Thanks!

Will you have "limited visiblilty" items in the same category as "full visiblilty" items?
