exclude a product from a global volume discounts

I have set up a global volume discount for a user group for a site with 500ish products. I now want to exclude 5 product from getting the discount.

Is there a way to do this without adding each of the products to the discount rule one at a time?

What about putting those 5 products in some separate category and then applying a specific discount instead of global on all categories except the category containing those 5 products.

That would definatly be better than managing on a product by product basis.
