Order incomplete - Gift Certificate disappears

Order incomplete - Gift Certificate disappears

In testing I've discovered that a gift certificate was applied to a portion of an order but paypal failed (it was on my local server so that's to be expected) ...
. when I went to "manage gift certificates" I found the gift certificate was gone (it had been moved to inactive status).
. I moved the order to problem status - no change in gift certificate status.
. I moved the order to cancelled status - again no change.
. Since Deactivate was lit - I clicked Deactivate - the serial number disappeared.
. Next I clicked generate and got a warning that this would make the gift certificate active - it did not
. I clicked to show only active gift certificates - the list was empty
. I clicked to show inactive certificates - the certificate showed up.
. When I select ALL I can't tell the difference between an active and inactive item.

I understand the gift certificate becoming inactive when the order is "pending" or "problem". When I cancelled the order I expected it to become "active" again.

Has anyone else had similar results? Do you have to contact the customer (who you may not know although you should have their "correct" information on the order) to give them a new serial number or do you wait for the customer to call saying "I can't get my gift certificate to work".

You will have to void the payment manually.

So you're saying CANCEL order will not void the payment - correct?
I tried another test order, partially paid with gift certificate and remainder with pay pal, then went to manage orders and cancelled the order, this voided the test paypal portion of the order automatically with successful response. It did not cancel the gift certificate. I then voided the gift certificate payment and got successful response. When I went to manage gift certificates the amount had not been added back to the gift certificate so I guess that has to be done manually also?

As in payment gateways the authorized payments can be voided automatically but the captured payments can't similarly we are handling the gift certificates. When a gift certificate is captured it will not be voided automatically if you cancel the order you have to manually void the the gift certificate payment.

Gift certificate payment is treated as a 'captured' payment therefore it does not get voided automatically.

May be you can post this feature enhancement that captured payments should also be automatically 'refunded' when an order is canceled. Currently its not happening like this. Captured payments (including gift certificates) have to be refunded manually.
