Shipping weight problem

Post by compunerdy » Sun Jan 18, 2009 1:24 pm

Why is there a minimum weight required before USPS and UPS will return quotes? I have a customer trying to purchase 2 parts that weigh a total of .03 pounds and since there is no way to account for the weight of the box and .03 is evidently too light to get rates the customer cant checkout. The system should be set to raise the weight to whatever the minimum is required by the shipping agencys or better yet give us the option to add weight for the packaging materials.

Nobody else has this issue? Anyone know if it is AC7 or the shipping company that is requiring a minimum weight in order to return rates?

I had this problem as well. My products are auto generated. I noticed that every once in a while the shipping service would bomb for certain quotes and that my users were not presented with any shipping options (effectively ending their ability to place an order).

I tracked it down to the shipping weight. If you enable your UPS logging, you'll see that they return an error if you send a quote that weighs less than one pound. I got around this issue, by ensuring that any of my generated products that weighed less than 1 lb were defaulted to 1lb. I haven't had a problem since.

I would say the problem is technically on the UPS side of the water, although it would be nice if Able defaulted the weights of orders < 1lb within the service.

Good luck!

My problem is I sell a lot of small items. So if I up the weight on one then when someone orders 50 of them they really get screwed. I have this issue with USPS as well.

Hmm... I sell very small items as well.

I enter a weight of 0.33 lbs for most of my items and have some items which I enter 0.25 for the weight and customers can buy one item and receive UPS and USPS rates.

Have you tried changing it from .03 to something like .10? It might be seeing the .0(3) as weighing Zero.

Lots of mine are less than the .1

I am not sure what the cutoff is but if I put .1 then 10 is one lb but they dont weigh anywhere near that. So if they buy 50 thats 5lb for some screws?

Can I get a response from Able on this please. Is this going to be fixed in 7.2? I need ot know so I can find someone to customize it for me if not as its screwing everything up since I made the weights correct. Really we just need it to be able to add a set weight to account for the packaging weight which would actually fix this problem at the same time.

This is something that requires the modification of shipping gateways. Its not likely to be available in 7.2.

Why cant we just add a set amount of weight for packaging before it goes to the gateways?

The change required for this will be in gateways.

Is someone familiar enough with the code to fix this? I would be more than happy to pay for your time.

I cant for the life of me grasp why this was not a built in feature.

Was this addressed in any current release like 7.0.3 or did anybody find a resolution?

No but they did allow you to set a minimum package weight per shipper. So it helps with the light weight packages atleast.
