On product page, possible to get the original image back?

I know when using swatches, you can have the selection of the choice show a different large image, displacing the original product image. Is it possible to get the original default image back when another choice is made?

In other words,

Showing the product in Blue on entry to the product page,
clicking on 'green', shows the green product image,
clicking on 'large' defaults back to the original Blue image again.

I'm not sure if this is what you need, but on the following product, I set the image for all the swatches to be the same instead of a different one for each swatch option.

If you'll look at the Category 5E Cable as set as a demo product.... The main image changes as you select a color. The ORIGINAL main image is now gone for good. As set up, only the latest choice is shown. I'd like to get back to the default image (shows all four colors) when you move on to another choice that DOESN'T change the main image.

I know i can load the main image into each choice so it'll load again, but I can't imagine the work involved should I need to change/update that image on each swatch choice - and for radio buttons, there is no way to do even that.

Anyone done this the easy way?

From what I can tell, changing that would involve changing the source code in the OptionPicker.cs.
Maybe mazhar knows of a way to override that.

Well, I'm willing to bet that there aren't many people who use this feature, and those that do haven't seen the need to get the original img back.

The answer is no. That's OK with me. It isn't a huge thing, it'd just be nice to have someday....

Some stores have a product image for each image, like a red shoe, a blue one, a green one, etc. So if those colors are your product options, then it would make sense to replace the product image with the option images. This works well for clothing too... Show a white shirt, a yellow shirt, a green shirt, etc.

Other stores have one product image and a picture of each option, like a sofa with options like dark finish, light finish, wood trim, metal trim, brown fabric, black fabric, etc. So a picture of the option sample is giving, like a close up picture of the fabric, trim, and fabric. Since there are endless variations of these and can be upholstered on several different products, those options are reused across many products. Upholstering a sofa with 50 different fabrics, dozens of trimmings and finishes... just to take pictures for my options on my website isn't practical.

My point is it depends on the store. Since there are many types of stores out there, it would make sense to leave this as a "checkmark" option in AbleCommerce administration panel, instead of dictating the assumption.

It would be excellent (and easy) if you were to wire up this logic to a checkmark in the product option setup in the admin panel.. whether you want the swatch to use the product image location or not. But because AbleCommerce buries the option image swatch logic into the source code, we would need them to overloaded the method of BuildProductOptions with a controlId parameter that is used for the swatch images, defaulting to the ProductImage control if one is not passed in. Again, this is very simple but would need AbleCommerce to do it.

In my case, getting the original img back is just a want, not a need. I'm very happy that Able has the ability to do rows and columns of swatches, in different sizes ootb.

It would be cool to see the option swatch 400x400 at the main image area for just 3 seconds or so as you mouse over it or select it. But, getting the main image back is critical if there are five more options to select, some of which won't have large images to swap into the prime spot. I know there are add'l images for this, but I've got 25+ swatches on a product page. That's how I do it on my other platform - current site.

I make full-custom medicine cabinets.... many choices to be made and sometimes even a 100x100 swatch image isn't large enough to sell a $50.00 option.

You can use the main product image for each of the images that show when you click on a swatch by putting that image in the location in the swatches for the large image. By doing that, it could be customized for each product in case you want to show new images or the original product image the entire time.
