Adding note to shipping estimator

We would like to add a note to the shipping estimator when shipping rates are returned. We have managed to find where we can add a static note, that shows at all times in the shipping estimator sidebar, but have had no luck in getting a note to show when rates are returned. It is surely some simple thing that we are overlooking. Can anyone help with this?
