Custom input for product

Could someone tell me how to add option/variant of custom input for product? (i.e. "Name to appear on mug _________________"

You can create a product template for this purpose. Create a product template with one customer field for example let's say it Name. Then edit desired product and apply that product template to it. This will make a custom input field available on product where customer can enter a name.
