Email Settings Error

Post by mmackrell » Thu Aug 12, 2010 7:37 pm

I am working in a new store and received the email settings from my service provider.

I made the changes to the email settings area and tested this with an internal email, everything worked fine.

As soon as I started testing this with external email addresses (i.e. hotmail and corporate addresses of friends) I get the following error: "Server configuration was updated but the test resulted in error: Mailbox unavailable. The server response was: 5.7.1 Unable to relay for xxxxxx@xxx.xxx"

I assume I should be talking with my service provider. What do I ask them? Do they need to do anything more on their end?

My settings are:
SMTP Server: mail.xxx.com
SMTP Port: 25

I do not have SSL enabled, an SMTP username/password. I have tried using authentication and that doesn't work either. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Margie

OK, this is gonna sound like a really stupid question, but does anyone know what settings need changed on the Exchange Server? And what should these settings be? We are working with an offsite IT provider and they really aren't much help.

I thought maybe it was an IP adresses that needed permission, but that did not work.

Thanks,
Margie

The error above means that the SMTP server (running on your Exchange Server) requires authentication. Configure the email account you are planing to use on your AbleCommerce
site on your local computer first using a local email client like Outllok, Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail etc. Make sure the account information (user, password. smtp server)
provided by your hosting provider works and you are able to send/receive emails.

Enter the same information in your AC site under (Administration > Configure > Email > Settings) and make sure "Use Authentication:" check box is being checked. If you are able to
send emails from your local computer, but your AC site is still reporting errors check if SMTP port 25 is not being blocked on the server.

Thanks for the info. We ended up having our Exchange Server host talk with AC to get it worked out - it was one of those "lost in translation" problems and I only work there part time, so I never had a chance to speak with the hosting provider. All is working now.
