Customer Email Address during checkout?

When completing the order checkout process, there is no field to capture the customer email address. How is the customer email address collected during the order process? Thank you.

If the customer is already logged in then their user name is used for the email address. Otherwise they enter their email address on the checkout page right after their phone number. If you are not logged in you will see where it is entered.
