Spend $X.XX get Y (free product) ?

IS there a way to accomplish this? sounds simple enough. Would like to be able to add a free product to the basket if the current order total reaches $50.00 or more. Can someone point me to a thread were this has been done? Or know how to implement line of code to accomplish this?
