The search feature is finding items that are in categories marked hidden and private. Is this a bug in AC?
How can I prevent the customer from seeing these items from search results?

In hidden categories try changing the visibility of all category children to hidden or private.

When you hide a category you have the option to hide just the category or the category and all the items in that specific category. You may achieve this in admin mode by clicking on the visibility icon for the specified category and then by choosing the sentence that specifies Yes, change visibility of the category and all its contents.
