Manufacturer Hierarchies

Hello, can anyone provide some guidance on how to implement manufacturer hierarchies? For example, Manufacturer B is a child to Manufacturer A. I'm thinking of using ac_CustomFields to hold the reference ID to the parent manufacturer, but this seems kind of messy.

Could you tell me more about how you would use manufacturer hierarchies? Is a two level structure all you would use or are you thinking of a multi-level structure like the Able category tree? Are you thinking of something like a manufacturer and their brands (only two levels) or something else?
