We are finally successfully (we think) running two individual live websites from a single DB, allowing us to share inventory items that we want shared while still pulling from a common inventory. It was a lot of work tinkering and testing (thanks to all who gave their input, and to AC for giving us a temp license to work with), but tonight we moved the second site to AC, and things appear to be running smoothly.
I know that there are several people who had an interest in the same thing, so with Able's permission I will post the instructions on how we managed to tweak the system to do this. We may need to fine tune our instructions a bit first, though.
One of the biggest challenges was moving the customer histories across. Unfortunately, we could not move the passwords, so we had to put those all to a default password, but at least the customer maintains their history. I don't think we want to get into how that was achieved, as it required manipulating files in Excel and then copying directly to the appropriate SQL tables.
To check out the sites- and please hammer them and let me know of any glitches so that we can correct them- you can go to the following sites:

That's great.
The how to instructions will certainly make a very good post in 'Good Reference Posts' section.

Re: Multiple site- NOW RUNNING
How are your multiple stores going? I hope you can share the code or at least the concept of how you did this. I am faced the same situation and would like to consolidate our efforts. Let me know if there is something we can do. Thx.

Re: Multiple site- NOW RUNNING
Have you given any thought to Google and rankings? Do you think Google might penalize you for having 2 URL's using the same DB?
Re: Multiple site- NOW RUNNING
Google should not even be aware of our DB operation. And, the pages are just as unique as if we used two separate DB's (even every page title is different).
