Browser compatability IE6/7/8, FF, etc. Test your sites.

Post by William M » Sat Apr 11, 2009 7:41 am

I'm working on a new Able site. Just about done with the heavy lifting, getting on to loading products.

I've been building in FF3 with the help of one of Able's approved developers. I just tested my site in IE6 and IE7. Holy Cow.... what a mess.

Just for the heck of it, I opened 40 Able sites offered as examples on 5 developer's sites as well as Able's and a dozen more in sigs here on the forum. Some of these sites have obviously never been tested in IE6, 7, 8 - pretty common browsers, yes?

I encourage you all to look at your sites with as many browsers as you can find. I promise, if your shoppers are seeing what I have, you're loosing sales.

So.... what's the story on browser compatablity?

Able has some errors in the style.css that I have to fix on every site to get it to display correctly on some browsers. In particular, there are several places where it says font:Arial, etc instead of font-family: and once those are corrected, the sites usually display OK.

Firefox is just so nice to develop against, what with Firebug and all.
Don't have access to all browsers for testing? Virtual browser sessions for most popular browsers available at http://www.xenocode.com/Browsers/

IE also has a problem with min-width and max-width. This shows up on the product pages.
