Do DHL and FedEx require HxWxL to work?

We've been struggling to set up the shipping gateways for our bookstore. [Small items, size not typically an issue.] We had no problem with UPS. But we are unable to get FedEx Overnight/Priority Overnight and DHL International to work even though we have existing accounts and have input all the right account information. After digging around some on those shipper's sites I have begun to think that they aren't going to work unless we go in and specify the size for all of our products (what an unnecessary pain!). Our local reps for the 2 companies have been distinctly unhelpful. Does anyone know if the size specifications are required to make FedEx and DHL return shipping quotes? If that's not the problem, any other ideas?
