Changing defaults in Order screen

We have changed several of the default settings for the Orders screen by adjusting them in the Default.aspx file. However, the one setting that simply does not take effect is the number of orders per page. We can get our selection to show as the default, but have to click the Search button in order for it to take effect, as when you go to the Orders screen only 20 orders are showing regardless of what we have set as the default. Is there another place that this is set? We would like to show at least 50 orders per page automatically.
