Is it possible to have an alternate "Add to Cart" button until all of the choices have been made?

Sounds like a no-brainer, but all carts seem to let you click on the "Add to Cart" button just to be told you need to make your choices first. Wouldn't it be more friendly and informative to gray it out or place instructions there until you can actually use it?

If the argument is that someone might miss a choice or can't find a choice, that's an effect of bad page design.

Choices are something specific to a product and category listing shows all child products. So I think keeping category pages aware of general information makes sense. If you want to your add to cart work even with products having choice directly from category pages then you can customize you category listing page. All neccessary information about how to collect and build choices etc for product could be seen from BuyProductDialog control.
