The thumbnail image file name must be in the format of the sku with an "_t" after it. Otherwise AC7 won't pick it up.
Also make sure you have Image Lookup enabled on the Logo and Images setup page.

in other words, if i want to have thumbnail image for all the product pictures, i need to rename the normal picture sku with an" _t" , and move it to the product picture folder? is that right? thank you for your help master YODA

If you'll upload one image with the built-in upload tool, you'll see the format that's created.

Not rename. Resize and give new name.
One product record has three pictures. If your product has a SKU 12345, then your product picture files would be 12345.jpg (main image) 12345_t.jpg (thumbnail size) and 12345_i.jpg (icon size).
So you have to take your main image and copy, resize and rename it down to the thumbnail size. Then do it again down to the icon size.
Or you can upload it using the product image upload feature on the product edit page. It'll automatically make the 3 sizes for you, but obviously a very manual way to do it. I wouldn't recommend that way for lots of images.
If you have all your main images and want to bulk convert/rename them in one easy pass, head over to
http://www.softorbits.com and look at their batch image resizer. Works wonders, I use it every few months to freshen my sites 40,000+ product image files.
