Data replication from Live to Dev sites

Post by WylieE » Tue Jul 14, 2009 10:39 am

Many AC sites using Authorize.net lost their card processing capabilities on the 3rd due to an outage at a data center in Seattle. Our site is co-located in the same building and our entire site was down for over a day. This has been a good kick in the rear to revisit our disaster recovery policies.

Like many businesses, we have a development server and a live server. Our dev server is onsite and our live site is on another set of servers at a remote data center. We do backups of both sites, but the data sets are different. Daily inventory management is done on the live site. We need to have access to current data if the live site goes down again, and mirroring the live data on our dev site would seem to be a good solution. Agreement/disagreement????

It is easy enough to set up replication between SQL servers. However, I am unsure how this will impact any data triggers or if there are other negative repercussions. Any thoughts, words or warning or advice? Would replicating data be a good idea or bad for data redundancy?

Thanks everyone.
