AbleCommerce Shopping Cart Software

Does anyone have experience with creating a custom search using Template values? I have added about 4-5 template values per product that I would like tos earch on. I can create the SQL required for the search but cannot find the mechanism in the current search architecture to implement. VB is my preferred programming language.
