Kit/Bundle with Variants?

I've run into an issue with a product package I want to sell. I have two variants set up for one of the items I want to include in the package, but bundling doesn't allow selectable variants (you have to select them before you can add the item to the bundle). The variants are extremely helpful in keeping # of products listed down (only have to list 1 product with 16 variations, instead of 16 individual products) so I don't really want to get rid of them. I currently have the product package listed as a single product, with the two variants to select from. This works just fine, however it won't allow me to keep track of the inventory for each individual product. From an inventory standpoint, it makes the most sense to bundle the existing products, so as to keep track of individual items sold.

Has anybody else run into this issue/come up with a solution?

I just realized I can add the same product with different variants as a drop down. Sort of solves my problem, but not entirely... any other ideas?

That's the only way. Variants and kits were designed to fill two different needs. They really weren't designed to fully integrate like you need them to do.
