Orphaned products still an issue

I've been using dataport to test batches of product uploads to a new AC 7.0.3 install. After each upload test, we review the catalog, make necessary corrections in the source data and then delete the test category.
Deleting the test category should delete all the sub categories and products in those sub categories. However when I check the Orphaned Products page, it is filled with hundreds in the list.
There's been no code changes. No site crashes. Nothing manipulated in the data directly. We dataport up a few hundred products, do some analysis and then click the Delete button on the root category. How were orphaned products ever allowed to come about in the first place?
Finally, how do we get rid of all these? There's hundreds of them and clicking the little red "X" several hundred times isn't an effective solution.
