Simple invoice payment

Hi,
I have a few questions regarding payments.
We've created a shop that is supposed to only be available to registered customers. (This is a distributor selling products to retailers, not end-consumers).
Initially all customers will only pay by invoicing. Later on, there might be an interest to activate live payment with creditcards for new or small customers, but for now, only invoicing is enough.
However, i am not able to set this up...? The only paymentmethod type that seems to fit the purpose somewhat is the "Purchase Order" type, but that requires the customer to enter a PO number, which isn't always the case (i.e. it should not be mandatory). Trying to add a new paymentmethod without using any of the types in the dropdown is possible, but that paymentmethod is never displayed in checkout...
Invoicing should be a VERY common paymentmethod for shops that are primarily directed towards companies rather than end-consumers... Howcome there is no such payment method type?
What would it entail to setup such a paymentmethod?
We are integrating the orders created in the shop with a backend business system named Mamut so that orders created in AC will automatically be created in Mamut. Should this be done as a gateway?? Or by implementing code for a new payment method type?
I am a bit confused on the subject so any input at all is very welcome!
/Mike
