Is there a way to send automatic email notifications when a product becomes available?

There is no automatic Email notification feature available out of the box, one simple workaround could be to create a mailing list and show some sort of message to your customer who wants to purchase item currently out of stock that he should join this Email list to get alert when item becomes available. Then when item becomes available you can simply trigger a message to all interested users via mailing list.
