Pricing Rules fail with Options and Variants?

Post by William_firefold » Tue Nov 17, 2009 7:53 am

We are trying to consolidate our patch cables section of our site into just a few products instead of several hundred.
The product lines go like this:
Say we have 6 different types of cable, Cat5E, Cat5ENBS, Cat5EMB, Cat6, Cat6NBS, Cat6MB. Each of these types comes in 5 colors, Black, Blue, Green, Red, White. Each of these type/color combinations can be in one of several lengths: 1', 5', 10', 20', 100'.

We have more of all of these things, but for the sake of the example, this is 150 products. We want to use options and variants to bring this down to 6.
Using options and variants, we could set the base price for the 1' cable of a certain type and have a cost modifier for each length above that.
The problem we are running into is when we want to set pricing rules for 3 groups of people on these products. The pricing rules only work off of the base price of the product, but there is no ability to set pricing rules for variants of a product. If we set 3 prices for the 3 groups, its based off the lowest price, and then the cost modifiers add to it from there. But there is a difference in the size of the discount used on the pricing rule between the shortest cable and the longest. IE, if the base price of a 1' cable is $1.50, Group1 would get the cable for 1.25, Group2 for 1.00, Group3 for 0.75. If its 100', it could cost $75, with Group1 getting it for $70, G2=$65, G3=$60. Pricing rules working just from the base price of 1.50 cant take the longer lengths into account.

Is there anything in the system that can modify prices on variants after the fact? Maybe something based on the sku that is generated by the variant?

Yeah, Iv asked many times about this, Options and variants wont work with group price discount. Only kits will work with price groups. That would help a little but not do the same thing.
