Inventory Display AND Enabled Back Orders

Has anyone done this?

We want to have

a. On all items where “Allow Backorder:” = checked (on) AND with “Inventory Tracking:=Track Product" (on), show available inventory and set the maximum qty that can be ordered to the "Max Quantity:" parameter in the product.
b. On all items where “Allow Backorder:” = checked (on) and “Inventory Tracking:" = Disabled (off), do not show available inventory, but allow back orders as currently done. Maximum order-able to be set as done currently.
c. On all items where “Allow Backorder:” =unchecked (off) and “Inventory Tracking:" = Disabled (off), do as currently done which is display no inventory information but set the Maximum order-able to the available inventory or Max Quantity parameter on the product, whichever is lower.

This way we can show inventory most of the time and allow back orders most of the time but won’t get stuck with someone ordering more of a dead or discontinued product than we have. On certain products where we don't want to allow back orders (like a discontinued product) we would set Allow Backorder unchecked (off).

Further, would it be possible to do this with kits (in other words, looking at the availability of the components/products that make up the kit?
I'l take it without kits if needbe, but I'd love to have both.

If anyone is interested I think (still testing) I have accomplished this.

Basically there are a couple of "if" statements that need to be altered and Max qty on the products needs to be set to some qty that you don't want exceeded on the order.
