Hi,
I was wondering what is involved in creating a pop-up for bounces. I have a lot of people leaving my checkout area, even after putting a lot of items in my cart. I wanted to see if i could get an idea as to why these people are leaving, feedback is the best to evaluate any potential problems that might be occuring. I wold also like to do the same for my regular pages so i can collect the data and make any adjustments to the site. I can make the pop-up itself, but how do I get the pop-up to capture the data on different pages and the checkout pages? Would greatly appreciate any ideas!
Thanks
Dave

Re: Creating a Pop-up for Bounces
Hello Dave,
I'd pay special attention to your google bounce reports, identify the top exit pages and take a good hard look at them. I don't think anyone's a big fan of pop ups. You might just discourage them from ever returning?

Re: Creating a Pop-up for Bounces
There's two things here - bounces and abandoned carts:
Abandoned Carts are not bounces:
We are implementing an "Abandoned Basket Email" campaign on our store. It isn't setup yet, and it isn't exactly cheap to setup at first but should pay for itself over time. The company is Listrak (listrak.com - I'm not affiliated with the company, just a happy customer). They capture all the basket and customer info that gets entered which then gets sent to their system and entered into their "Conductor" email program (an automated email system based on triggers like time, clicks, or external events on a website). It sends them an email after a certain amount of time with a discount etc.
I know there is a little bit of weirdness/creep factor there, but other big companies do it too. And we get a good deal of revenue from our normal marketing emails sent via this program.
Bounces:
Try implementing A/B testing with Google Website Optimizer, that gives you a statistical look at what is performing better via conversions and/or more time on site, less bounces etc. Feedback from the users is always good, but might be better than a pop-up (which everyone does hate).

Re: Creating a Pop-up for Bounces
Thanks for the assistance and insights, i will certainly check out the other options. The whole idea I had in the pop-up, was to find out why people, who were filling up their shopping carts, sometimes with a lot of items, and then leaving the site (why do all that work and leave?). I was worried that they were unable to check out and needed to see if they could give me some feedback as to why they left. Google can only tell me how many, not why. The only way to do that is to ask them, thus having a popup at a page where a person leaves the site after filling up the cart seemed very reasonable. I would not have put the popups on the regular pages, just at the checkout pages. I will continue to see if this can be done, if anyone has any insight it would be great!
Thanks
