Bot Activity Detected!

I have just upgraded from v7.0.0 to 7.0.4 last weekend. So far it hasn't gone very smoothly. The latest issue is customers are telling me they can't checkout and are getting a message about Bot Activity. I tried entering the customer's order online just as he had tried and sure enough, this is the message I got:
Bot Activity Detected!
Your activity has been detected as a Bot or Spider by our system. If you believe you are seeing this message in error you can Retry the checkout after one minute.
I tried several times to no avail. I then tried entering the order through the control panel and was unable to complete the order. At various stages through the procedure, I would be taken back to the beginning instead of the next step.
Any ideas on what the problem might be?
