Price field in ac_ProductVariants isn't always populated

Price field in ac_ProductVariants isn't always populated

During some customization work, I ran into a really confusing situation.

In my ac_ProductVariants table, some variant records have the price field populated. Others do not. I can't seem to find a pattern or consistency between either.

Why would that be? How is the Price Calculator determining price for a variant if the variant price field is Null ??
