Refund without an initial payment

I've been trying to figure out a way to process a refund to a credit card when no original payment exists. We need to make this work for customers who are returning items, but they previously checked out anonymously and don't have an order number. Would this be possible? I know this scenario is not typical for an online store, although this happens quite frequently in our physical store. Right now, we can do this in quickbooks POS. This is one of the last things we need to get running to complete our able commerce POS project.

This is not likely to be supported by any payment gateway.
It will probably be more useful if you somehow figure out how to find the order which is being returned. The users who want to return must have some proof that they purchased it from you. That proof, whatever it is, should lead you to the original order.
