Buy one get one free

Hi,
Is there a way to create a buy one get one free function? There are a number of ways the user could trigger this functionality:

1. The user could simply add a product to their cart. This could cause a second instance of that product to be added with a $0 price
2. The user could enter a coupon code at checkout which could create a second order line for that product with a 50% discount on both items or even one item at full price and the other at $0
3. Another way I haven't thought of yet

Has anyone played around with this? I have looked at all options re pricing rules, bulk discounts etc and Im thinking some custom code is required.

Netfinity......

I am pretty sure you can accomplish this using coupons.

In the admin panel if you go to marketing-->coupons

add a new coupon and set the discount amount to 50%. Then set the quantity to 2. This means the customer would be required to purchase two of an item to get the discount. You can then set a product rule to limit the products that this will be available for.

I hope this helps.

How can you have something like:

"Buy product A and get product B 50% off"?

with a coupon.

We have just packaged up a plugin for that kind of situation.
Merchant sets up a store coupon applying to specific products and with a defined discount and other parameters using normal Able coupon set up. (The get one at % off product)
Merchant goes to the product edit page and in a special page for BOGO offers, they select what coupon they want the product to use (The Buy One product).
When customer adds a buy one product to the cart, an intermediate page comes up (similar to how the product accessories page comes up)
Customer can select the Get One product(s) there- it can be multiple products and products with options also.
Then if customer deletes the Buy One product in the basket, the Get One product is deleted also. The quantity box on the Get One product is disabled so customer can't up the quantity of the Get One product and get more than they should.
