Gift Certificate Discounts

Hello - I would like to know if it a discount can be applied to a Gift Certificate.
After testing I think it cannot be done without customization, but would like another person to please verify.
It looks like the amount entered while creating the gift certificate, is also the "balance" field in the giftCertificate Admin gridview. When I applied a Price rule, it brought the balance down (from $20.00 to the $10).
I do have a work around in Admin but I don't know if my client will like the process.
