How does the Full Text Search index get refreshed?

Does this happen automatically? I seem to recall a way to trigger this in earlier versions of AC 7. How often does this happen?
If FTS is active on a store, there is a button on the Configure-->Maintenance where you can rebuild the index. That only shows up if FTS is on.
It can also be done by setting up a schedule in the full text catalog.
