Product Template edit not passed to product

Hi,

When I edit a product template in Admin>catalog>Product Template), the changes do not show up in any of the associated products.

I have to go to each individual product, click "product template", then "save" for the changes to take effect.

Obviously, this is very time consuming if the product template has 10 or 20 products associated with it. Is this a glitch? Or by design? Thank you for your help in advance.

I have seen that happen with an upgrade- it seemed like something wasn't triggered. Did you upgrade from one version of Able to another and then it happened? Do the fields still show up on the product even though you can't see them in the admin? That was what has happened on a couple of sites.
