Horizontal Category Navigation

I've been trying to figure out how to get our category links to display above the main content area of our pages. It seems, according to some of the new store templates that AbleCommerce is selling, that it is possible.
We're using the old leftbar vertical nav right now, can anyone point me in the right direction on how to achieve a layout similar to the attached image? Thanks.
