How do you change the layout options for a single page?

I have two different footers to use on different category grid pages. There's a parent category grid page and then there are children category grid pages. They all have the same Active Layout and the Content (Category Grid Page Level 1) but whenever I set a child's footer, the corresponding parent's footer is changed and vice versa.

I was told doing things in the Editor Zone affected only the page being viewed and not all pages unless you apply it to a top level parent and then it trickles down. So why is it trickling back up? I change the parent category page first, and then change the child category pages, and that changes the parent category page back again. I need the parent to stay put.

You got to be freaking kidding me.

Not only this, but we have different product page content for different products. I just noticed when I'm changing one product page content it changes to that content for EVERY SINGLE PRODUCT across the store. This can't be by design.

It sounds like you are scrambling things up. In the bottom part of the editor zone, those six dropdowns set the components for whatever display page you have set in the top part under display page.
For example, if you have category grid (Category.aspx) in the display page, the content dropdown originally shows Category Grid Page. If you change that, it will change everywhere the Category.aspx is used.
