Fedex with AC 7.0.3

Like another unanswered user on here, I too am still using AC 7.0.3 and only recently had a need/desire to register our store with a Fed-Ex account. After going through the setup process fedex display in my list of shipping merchants, but when placing an order it is missing from the drop down menu.
I am seeing a lot of talk on here about a web service integration, a patch, and fixes in newer versions of AC. Can someone please explain this to me in laymans terms?
We have not upgraded our AC in well over a year, so I assume we are using the API and not the web service integration? Is there something I need to do to upgrade to the web service integration, or would it be possible to get this working with what we currently have in place?
