Accepted AMEX when it's not an option

We recently stopped taking AMEX cards on our website. I removed it as a payment option, so it no longer shows in the drop down option. I also removed it from my Authorize.net payment gateway. I just had a customer email that they used an AMEX card, but just selected VISA in the drop down and it went through. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

Your merchant account with Authorize.Net must still show your AMEX merchant account as active. Contact Authorize.Net to have your AMEX merchant account removed from your gateway profile. Otherwise Authorize.Net continues to accept AMEX even if the website checkout doesn't offer it as a choice.

Another thing I've seen is removing the AMEX payment method in AC7 doesn't remove the AMEX graphic image on the payment page. Shoppers see both the Visa/MC image and the AMEX image and assume AMEX is acceptable. Even if the dropdown choices are only Visa/MC.

Why a shopper thinks an image of the back of an AMEX card trumps the dropdown choices escapes me, but I've seen it happen first-hand :D
