Delivery Instructions Character Limit

The character limit for delivery instructions on the Ship Method page is set to 255 by default. Is that limit due to a database field or variable size limitation, or is it arbitrary?

The ac_OrderShipments.ShipMessage field in the database is limited to 255 characters.
