Free Shipping for a a single product

How can I set a single item to free shipping without using a coupon?
Seems like this should be a simple thing.

You will need to set up a new warehouse (Configure > Shipping > Warehouses) with a new shipping method (Configure > Shipping > Methods). For the new warehouse, just enter the same address information of your main warehouse. For the new free shipping method, create a new fixed rate shipping method, leave all charges at 0, and set that it applies only to the free shipping warehouse. On the item's catalog page, set the warehouse to the new warehouse. That should do it.

We have a product set up as free shipping using the method outlined above. On some orders it is still charging shipping for that item when it is combined with other items that are from another warehouse. Any ideas why this is happening? Does the item need to have the shippable field set to "separately?"

Different warehouses should always be forcing different shipments. You shouldn't be seeing anything combined into the free-shipping item's shipment if it's the only product assigned to that warehouse. Check the products getting combined into that free-shipping shipment and make sure they're NOT assigned to the free-shipping warehouse.

We are wanting to offer free shipping on only one or two products, but need to limit it to US address only. Is there a way with this method to accomplish this?

Yes. You would assign the zero-charge shipping method to the free-shipping warehouse and to the Region you use for US addresses. I believe it's called Contiguous US in the default Able setup.

I thought of that, but then would the product still be availabe fornon US customers? I still want them to be able to purchase it, just not get free shipping.

Long as you also have a non-zero shipping method assigned to the same warehouse for a different region, yes. So two methods on the same warehouse. One for region Contiguous US, one for everything BUT region Contiguous US.

That should do it for you.

I have one product set up as coming from separate warehouse which is set up as free shipping to all zones. While free shipping appears as a option when someone tries to buy it, free shipping is not the only option offered. I've checked all the settings and they seem to be right, but the problem persists. What might I have missed?

Do you have your other shipping methods configured for all warehouses? If you don't want them to show for the free warehouse you will need to specify another warehouse for them.
