Shipping - adding carton cost to UPS shipping cost

Post by ckirklen » Thu Oct 04, 2012 11:29 am

Currently, we have a small catalog of roughly 30 kits and 10 standalone products, each of which have options/variants that affect weight and cost. The pricing we show on the site currently includes the cost of the box needed to ship it. Each kit has a slightly different box, hence slightly different cost.

When a customer adds something to their cart, we're able to give UPS dims/weight they need to return shipping estimate, and that works fine. However, this wouldn't apply to customers who pick up in store, and we'd like to have the retail price we show on the site reflect pickup price, without the shipping carton, rather than the cost of the product in a shipping carton. Then if they decide to have it shipped, we would add in the price of the shipping carton to whatever UPS calculates as shipping cost.

If we show the customer the cost without the box, assuming they'll pickup, what is the best way to include that kit's box cost if they choose to have it shipped via UPS?

Duplicating ship methods (UPS next day, UPS ground, UPS 2Day, etc) for each kit and then adding a fixed cost for that kit's box to whatever UPS returns seems like overkill.

Any thoughts appreciated.
