Product Summary Not Seen by SE's?

Post by kwikstand » Wed May 08, 2013 8:52 am

I was examinig my site for content for SEO purposes and noticed that category pages don't show all product summaries in "Fetch as Googlebot" or the source code.

Products that have too many words to fit and have the link "Read More" do not have any of their summary descriptions at all. Other products with shorter descriptions do.

You can see this on one of my category pages here: http://www.contractors-solutions.net/hi ... thing.aspx

I have been editing these summaries so that my categories have more content on them and appear more interesting to the Search Engines.

Does this mean the Search Engines can't read this valuable content on category pages?

I don't think so. I suspect something is wrong with 'Fetch as Googlebot' tool you are using. AC does not send a different content to the Googlebot than the one it sends to standard browsers.

I see the same results when I just "view source code" from my browser.

You might still have some code that chops off some of longer summaries even if someone clicks the read more link and you will need to increase the character count before the chop off. The first product on that page looks like some is chopped off, even after the more details link is clicked.

No, those are the comlete summaries after you click read more. The reason I was checking this is because I was wondering what happens to the longer text after it gets chopped off. I wanted to know how much of it do the search engines see and hence how much "content" is on the page. It turns out that NONE of it is seen. At least it seems that way. This doesn't make much sense to me. I hope I am wrong.

Take a look at the source code of the page. I can't find any text at all for those long summarries. The first product starts at about line 220.

I guess maybe I need to make my summaries shorter? Less is more? I don't know.

The text that has read more/less functionality is controlled by the javascript code. The description cotent IS infact on the page but it is part of the script code. if you view the source and go the the bottom where scripts are, you will find the descriptions there in the code. I am not sure how google bot takes such content. It is not likely to be ignoring this data completely, but I am not sure if it can index it intelligently enough.

I see it now. Way down on the bottom. It shoes the short summary and then the complete summary. The short version is there twice. I am not betting that the search engines see this very well at all. They don't read javascript so I doubt they see this. I also checked the content with this Search Engine Spider Simulator: http://www.webconfs.com/search-engine-s ... ulator.php It doesn't show any of the content anywhere when the summaries are too long.

I went and shortened all my summaries to avoid this problem. Too bad I can't make them longer so Googlebot has more content to read.

How does the summary length get determined?

Does AC Gold do it this way also?

I was looking at Gold R3 vs R4 for another reason a noticed that the
private void AddSummaryDetails(CatalogNode catalogNode, PlaceHolder itemTemplate)

is in R3 but not in R4 on CategoryGrid4. Maybe they found a bug in it.
