Searching by SKU

My client wants to allow customers to search by SKU. I found this and implemented the change:

What I found is that it does work for items that do not have any variants. Most of their items have variants and so the SKU is assigned at the variant level. The solution above seems to only find items with SKUs that are assigned at the product level. Is there any way to search product variant SKUs?

That would require a customization unless putting the variant skus into the product keywords field would work.
