Spambot detection

Post by ckirklen » Thu Jan 30, 2014 8:41 am

We're seeing lots of abandoned carts by anonymous users (GUID for user id) that have clearly been filled by a spambot - comments fields in product line item are boilerplate spam text that has no relevance to the product, qty numbers are random and not consistent with what an actual customer would enter, etc.

Short of adding a Captcha or similar human detection barrier before an anonymous user could add to cart, has anyone found a way to detect spambot cart submisions? The cart is abandoned, so clearly the login/checkout process isn't being compromised, but management notices huge dollar-value orders that have been abandoned and have to ignore those when analyzing how to lower the number of abandonments.

The very nature of an anonymous cart seems to enable spambots to do this, but maybe there's a way i'm not thinking of to detect/prevent/delete these fake abandoned carts.

Are you using a robots.txt file?
