Allows invalid card type on payment?

It was brought to my attention today that it doesn't appear to matter what the customer selects for a Card Type during checkout. We had a customer select MasterCard, then proceed to enter an American Express credit card number. The payment went through fine, but then when we go to payment details it still shows MasterCard as the card type. Ideas?
