Catalog search only searches the product name

Catalog search only searches the product name

I can't search the catalog by SKU or manufacturer in the Admin screen. Is this the intended functionality?

I really, really, really need to search by SKU and manufacturer number.

Also, the search window in the Browse Catalog page contains a checkbox for Include Sub-categories. The search window from the Catalog pulldown menu does not have this checkbox. Yet it still appears to be searching sub-categories.
