smtp mail with Gmail

I'm having difficulties setting up my site using smtp with Gmail.

First, I entered smtp.gmail.com, port 465, checked authentication, entered my username@mydomain.com and password. I attempted to send a test message but the server request timed-out.

Second, I followed all of the steps above but changed the port 587 and got an error, "The SMTP server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated. The server response was: 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first 29sm18989790wrl.18".

Any thoughts?

If GMail supports standard POP3 settings, AC7 should support it just fine.

If they require encrypted POP3, I don't know if AC7 supports it or not. Any other system I've seen has a separate checkbox for encryption-enabled.
